Can someone travel with me to my medical appointment abroad and will they be required to pay for their travel abroad?

The insured is responsible for selecting a companion that is able to perform the expected duties of a companion that can remain with the insured for the length of time that you will be abroad. The insured will be responsible for the ticket cost of a replacement companion if the initial companion’s stay is terminated due to the companion’s failure to adhere to the regulations. The insured must communicate any changes in selected companion to the Medical Referral Officer in charge of arrangements for the insured to the designated country at least 7 working days prior to the travel date for the appointment in the designated country. Any fees associated with a change in companion if this is not communicated within the given time will be at the expense of the insured. Please note: the companion will be staying in the same room as the insured at the accommodations provided.

The request for one social companion may be submitted by the treating physician, with the MRA request based on a medical indication. A companion is medically indicated if:

- The insured requiring treatment abroad is a child 18 years or younger
- The insured traveling for medical treatment has a physical or mental handicap as documented by a treating physician
- The insured has a documented previously investigated low IQ diagnosis by a physician
- The insured is undergoing psychiatric treatment or has previously undergone treatment but has a risk of becoming unstable
- Is scheduled for/or will be scheduled for a procedure/operation that will incapacitate the insured
- The insured is flown out as an emergency transfer (via Air Ambulance) and is unconscious or incapacitated
- The insured is being transferred for a combination of radio- and chemotherapy
